2008 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe

As-tested price: $56,185
Drivetrain: 6.2-liter V8; rwd, six-speed manual
Output: 436 hp @ 5900 rpm, 428 lb-ft @ 4600 rpm
Curb weight: 3217 lb
Fuel Economy (EPA/AW): 19/15.3 mpg
Options: 3LT preferred-equipment group, including AM/FM stereo, six-disc CD changer, MP3 format, Bose premium seven-speaker system, head-up display, power telescoping steering wheel, heated seats, memory package, universal home remote, side-impact airbags, adjustable sport bucket seats with perforated leather inserts, six-way power-adjustable passenger seat, luggage shade, parcel net, steering-wheel radio controls ($4,505); Z51 performance package, including larger cross-drilled brake rotors, performance-tuned tires, stabilizer bars, springs, shocks and gear ratios ($1,695); polished-aluminum wheels ($1,295); dual-mode exhaust ($1,195); removable transparent roof panel ($750); crystal red metallic paint ($750)

OUR TAKE: Not so many years ago, Chevy made a huge deal out of the Z06 hitting 405 hp. Now the base car makes 436 hp, and it’s bolted into such a well-mannered and well-built chassis (no creaks and rattles here), with such a beautiful body, that there really is no competition at this price. Sure, Vettes always have been fast, but the new one is a real stormer.

The new steering feels better than the ’07 model’s, and so does the gearbox—more direct. The interior is full of improved materials, too, though it’s kind of a bummer that Chevy charges $4,505 to get the nicer materials as they are part of the package that includes the sport buckets, side airbags, etc. And it’s disappointing that Chevy still hasn’t seen fit to junk these seats and put in some real ones.

It costs about $15k to upgrade to a 2008 Z06 from this car, optioned the way it is. For that extra money, you get an extra 69 hp, more aerodynamic bodywork, a 55-pound weight loss, a stiffer chassis, firmer suspension, bigger brakes and special rims.

However, performance from this base car is nothing to sneeze at, and it is one heck of a bargain. The extra kick from the LS3 was apparent and, as expected, the chassis handles the power really well. The car remains very neutral and easy to drive quickly, with your right foot easily scooting the back end around.

GM is doing a lot of things right lately. Not messing up the Corvette, and continuing to build its sports car mystique, is another one it nailed perfectly.

Tahoe and Yukon Hybrids Break New Ground

GM announces mpg estimates that rival Toyota Camry

The hybrid versions of the full-sized 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon SUVs will deliver fuel economy gains of 50 percent in the city over the standard, non-hybrid models.

Today (Sept. 27, 2007) at the Texas State Fair, General Motors will announce the EPA fuel economy estimates of 21 mpg city and 22 mpg highway for the two-wheel drive versions of the Tahoe and Yukon hybrids.

Those fuel economy ratings are expected to give GM best-in-class fuel economy for large SUVs. The ratings also rival those of many midsize and large cars. For example, the 2WD Tahoe and Yukon match the four-cylinder Toyota Camry's 21 mpg city rating and beat the V-6 Camry's city rating by 2 mpg.

GM expects to sell 10,000 units per year, combined, of the hybrid SUVs. Prices won't be announced until closer to launch, but are expected to start in the low- to mid-$40,000 range.
The Tahoe and Yukon hybrids are the first vehicles to use the innovative Two Mode hybrid transmission GM developed with DaimlerChrysler and BMW. GM will also use the hybrid system in pickup trucks.

The EPA fuel economy figures are lower than some expected, but that's due to the agency's changing its test procedures to more accurately reflect real-world driving conditions.
The official EPA figures for both vehicles are 21 city/22 highway for 2WD models and 20 mpg city/20 mpg highway for 4WD models.

The Yukon and Tahoe hybrids are equipped with GM's cylinder deactivation system, which cuts off four of the V-8's cylinders when the vehicle reaches highway cruising speeds. They have lightweight body panels and wind-cheating bumper covers.

The two-mode hybrid is a full hybrid, meaning the Tahoe and Yukon can drive entirely on electricity. GM's two-mode hybrids can go up to 32 miles per hour using just electricity. At higher speeds, the two-mode system uses either all gasoline or a combination of fuel and electric propulsion.

GM, DaimlerChrysler and BMW invested $1 billion in the Two Mode system.
"This is something that really changes the game," said Gary White, GM vice president and vehicle line executive for full-sized vehicle development team.

Tahoe and Yukon hybrids are by far the most fuel-efficient large SUVs on the market. By comparison, the two-wheel drive 2008 Nissan Armada and Infiniti QX56 and the two-wheel drive Ford Expedition all get EPA ratings of 12 city and 18 highway. The EPA has not released figures for the 2008 Toyota Sequoia.

The Nissan and Infiniti ratings are for the 5.6-liter V-8 and the Expedition rating is for the 5.4-liter V-8. GM's Two Mode hybrid SUVs have a 6.0-liter V-8 engine.
GM is also planning to use the Two Mode system in its Silverado and Sierra pickups. The Dodge Durango will use the Two Mode system next year, and Mercedes-Benz and BMW will use their versions in the ML 450 and X6 SUVs.

Two Mode Specifications

The 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid and GMC Yukon Hybrid tow like SUVs, but are no more thirsty than a midsized car.
  • Price: Low-to-mid $40,000 range
  • City/Highway EPA Ratings: 21/22 (two-wheel drive); 20/20 (four-wheel drive)
  • Engine: 6.0-liter, V-8

Mercedes-Benz' Alternative-Fuel Lineup

Daimler AG prepares over a dozen gas savers for the U.S.

Hybrid versions of the Mercedes S 400 will go on sale in the United States in 2009

Daimler AG unveiled 18 alternative-fuel vehicles at the Frankfurt auto show, 17 of which will go into production by 2010. A half dozen or more of them will come to the United States.

Hybrid versions of the Mercedes ML 450 and S 400 will go on sale in the United States in 2009, Klaus Maier told AutoWeek's sister publication, Automotive News. He is executive vice president of sales and marketing at the Mercedes Car Group.

Mercedes will launch clean-diesel versions of the GL and ML SUVs and the R-class crossover next year. Those light trucks will meet emissions requirements in all 50 states.

Currently, the E 320 Bluetec passenger car's diesel engine is sold in 42 states. When that car is redesigned in 2010, it will be eligible for sale in 50 states.

Alternative-power versions of the Smart city car also could cross the Atlantic.

A trial with 100 electric Smart ForTwo cars has begun in London. Roger Penske, CEO of Penske Automotive Group, wants the experiment extended to the United States. His company is Smart's U.S. distributor.

"We think it is the next step for Smart," said Penske, who has driven the electric car.

Europe will get a Smart hybrid this fall, as well as diesel hybrid versions of the E and S class in 2010.

The unveiling of the 18 alternative-fuel vehicles came at a DaimlerChrysler extravaganza.

Said CEO Dieter Zetsche: Every one of the cars "demonstrates breathtaking design, driving pleasure, safety, dynamism and responsibility for the environment - all of which belong together at Mercedes-Benz across our entire model range."

Maier says Mercedes put on the extravaganza to demonstrate that "we want to be in the forefront with the environment."

The Fastest Car powered by Dry Cell Batteries

In 2006, Panasonic and the Tokyo Institute of Technology created the first manned aircraft to be powered by 160 AA ‘Oxyride’ batteries - a fantastic achievement, but the record category itself is not one that is monitored by Guinness World Records.

So, a year later and undeterred, Panasonic set their sights on a new, world record breaking challenge – that is, to build the world’s fastest car powered by dry cell batteries. To do this, they teamed up with students from Osaka Sangyo University to form The Oxyride Speed Challenge Team, and development began on the Oxyride Racer.

The Racer measures 3.3 m (10 ft 9 in) long, 78 cm (2 ft 6 in) wide and 56 cm (1 ft 10 in) tall. Its body is made of plastic that as been reinforced by carbon fibre - a strong and light composite material, which means the car weighs in at only 38 kg (83 lb). It’s tiny, but fast. At a test course in Shirosato town in Ibaraki prefecture (100 km northeast of Tokyo), student Takashi Sudo piloted the Racer to achieved an average speed of 105.95 km/h (65.5 mph) and a maximum speed of 122 km/h (75.8 mph)! And all this, on just 192 Oxyride batteries!

Seemlessly Drive into Winter

(NewsUSA) - The winter months are quickly approaching, which means it's time to gear up for the weather ahead. Don't forget your car on your winter to-do list. Having you vehicle serviced for cold-weather driving is important not only for peace of mind, but also for personal safety.

The non-profit National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), the group that tests and certifies automotive technicians, offers tips on preparing your car for the winter months.
  • Read the owner's manual. These manuals offer recommended service schedules that are specific to your car.
  • Correct any engine problems you've noticed. Hard starts, rough idling, stalling and diminished power can go from being a problem to a disaster in cold weather.
  • Check your engine coolant. The level, condition and concentration of the coolant should be checked and replaced if old. Replace coolant with a 50/50 mix of coolant and water.
  • Check your belts. Take your car to a professional technician to check the tightness and condition of drive belts, clamps and hoses.
  • Change your oil and oil filter as specified in your manual.
  • Be sure your heater and defroster are in good working order both for your comfort and visibility.* Check your battery. The only accurate way to detect a weak battery is with professional equipment, however, any weekender can scrape corrosion from posts and cable connections, clean surfaces and re-tighten connections. Be sure to wear eye protection and rubber gloves for safety
  • Check for exhaust leaks. Inspect the trunk and floorboards of your vehicle for small holes, which could emit deadly exhaust fumes
  • Check your tread. Worn tires are of little use amid the winter elements. Replace them with all-season radials or snow tires, depending on your climate.
  • Replace worn windshield wipers and keep plenty of washer fluid on hand
  • Put a bottle of fuel de-icer in your tank once a month to help keep moisture from freezing in the fuel line.

America's "Greenest" Vehicles

Three different Honda Civics made the "Green Vehicles" list compiled by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy—the Civic GX, Civic Hybrid and standard Civic.

by the Editors of MSN Autos

These mainstream vehicles earned the best "green" scores from the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy.

if you want to help the environment by driving the most environmentally positive or "greenest" vehicle, think small or think hybrid.

Three of the top five vehicles that rank as the greenest of the 2007 model year, according to the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE), are powered by hybrid powertrains that combine a gasoline internal combustion engine with an electric motor for improved fuel economy. But unlike last year, you don't have to drive a small car to be green.

Message Board: Are domestic vehicles being fairly judged by the ACEEE? Voice your opinion!

A nonprofit organization, the ACEEE is dedicated to advancing energy efficiency. Each year the ACEEE publishes the Green Book, listing the Green Scores and environmental information about vehicles of the new model year. The ACEEE also releases lists of the 12 "greenest" and 12 "meanest" vehicles of the new model year, according to Green Book data.
One of the mainstays of the ACEEE "Greenest Vehicles" list for the last several years—the hybrid-powered Honda Insight—is no longer in production, so this year's greenest car is the Insight's sibling, the Honda Civic GX.

Scoring 57 points for 2007, the Civic GX moves up from its second place finish last year. The natural gas-powered Civic GX is not a hybrid, but operates on compressed natural gas (CNG). While it may not go as far on each gallon of fuel, its combination of high efficiency and near-zero emissions makes it the highest-ranking vehicle for the environment. Note that the Civic GX is for sale to retail customers in California and New York.

The Green Score is a numeric value of a vehicle's environmental friendliness, as assigned by the ACEEE. Determined by more factors than just fuel economy, the score also incorporates tailpipe emissions that cause global warming. The higher the Green Score the more environmentally friendly the vehicle, based on the ACEEE evaluation.

The second, third and fourth eco-friendliest vehicles in the U.S. are all hybrids—the Toyota Prius, Honda Civic Hybrid and Nissan Altima Hybrid, respectively. The Altima Hybrid is all new for the 2007 model year; however, according to Nissan, its first hybrid will initially be available in eight states: California, Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont.

The only other hybrid to make it into the ACEEE's top 12 happens to be the largest car on the list—the Camry Hybrid. Coming in seventh, the midsize Camry Hybrid earns a green score of 46, the same as the sixth-place Toyota Corolla.

Readers will also note there are no domestic-branded cars on the list for 2007. "We've seen a lot of advertising this past year about efficient and eco-friendly vehicles being offered by domestic manufacturers. But when you look at the specs that matter [to the environment], it's fair to say the imports have Detroit's number," said author and principal vehicle analyst James Kliesch, a Research Associate at the ACEEE.

2008 Lamborghini

Lamborghini Reventón

Story Filed: 9/12/2007 1:49:17 PM EST
By Alexander Popple

A fighter jet-inspired exclusive special edition for 2008.

"Uncompromising . . . a true automotive superlative.” That’s how Stephan Winkelman, president and CEO of Lamborghini describes his company’s latest product. And it needs to be: With a price of nearly $1.4 million U.S. — plus tax — it’s more than four times the price of the “ordinary” Murcielago that it’s based on.

It will be exclusive, too — just 20 of these exceptional cars will be produced, and all will be sold during 2008.

Everything about this car is more extreme than the Murcielago and every carbon fiber panel is new. Sharper edges; large, angled, forward-facing air intakes; deeply faired-in rear light clusters; a hood with open ventilation slots; asymmetrical body side air vents...seen side by side with the super-aggressive Reventón, the Murcielago looks almost tame.

Reventón will be offered in only one exclusive color: an opaque green-grey, also called Reventón. It’s a metallic paint with an unusual matte finish in contrast to the high shine finish common to most vehicles. The matching wheels have carbon rims screwed to aluminum spokes.

The Murcielago’s 6.5-liter 12-cylinder engine has been upgraded to 650 horsepower and 487 lb-ft of torque for the Reventón, with an 8000 rpm redline. A specially contoured near flat floor provides superior aerodynamics, giving the car a 0-100 kph (0-62 mph) performance of 3.4 seconds. A robotized gearbox transmits the power to all four wheels.

Inside, the fighter-jet theme is carried through. The Alcantara, carbon, aluminum and leather interior has a no-nonsense air of functional luxury, but the pièce de résistance is the LCD instrument panel, which presents drivers with two modes (selectable at the flick of a switch), either striking high-tech, multifunctional aircraft-style instruments, or more traditional (simulated) analogue dials. Both options display a “3-D” g-meter, which measures both longitudinal (accelerative) and lateral (cornering) g forces.

The one thing that’s not fighter jet-inspired is the name. No, Lamborghini found an even more bloodthirsty source for their new car’s badge: Reventón was the name of a bull that famously defeated and killed top bullfighter Felix Guzman in 1943.

It’s an impressive package and a characteristically flamboyant way to fulfill Lamborghini’s pledge to bring a new car to market every year.

Car Care At Its Best!

(ARA) - The vacations are over, the kids are back in school and cooler evenings have begun. The pros and the nonprofit National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) recommend that you take advantage of the lull to prepare your vehicle for the winter ahead. Breakdowns, never convenient, can be dangerous in cold weather. The following tips from ASE should give motorists a road map to fall car care.

First things first -- Read your owner’s manual and follow the manufacturer’s recommended service schedules. There are usually two schedules listed: normal and severe.

Engine performance -- Have engine drivability problems (hard starts, rough idling, stalling, diminished power, etc.) corrected at a good repair shop. Cold weather will make existing problems worse. Replace dirty filters -- air, fuel, PCV, etc.

Fuel -- Put a bottle of fuel de-icer in your tank once a month to help keep moisture from freezing in the fuel line. Note, too, that a gas tank that’s kept filled helps prevent moisture from forming in the first place.

Oil -- Change your oil and oil filter as specified in your manual -- more often (every 3,000 miles or so) if your driving is mostly stop-and-go or consists of frequent short trips.

Cooling system -- The cooling system should be flushed and refilled as recommended. The level, condition, and concentration of the coolant should be checked periodically. (A 50/50 mix of anti-freeze and water is usually recommended.) If you’re doing your own work, allow the radiator to cool down completely before removing the cap. (Newer vehicles have coolant reservoirs.) The tightness and condition of drive belts, clamps and hoses should be checked by a certified auto technician.

Heater/defroster -- The heater and defroster must be in good working condition for passenger comfort and driver visibility.

Windshield wipers -- Replace old blades. If your climate is harsh, purchase rubber-clad (winter) blades to fight ice build-up. Stock up on windshield washer solvent -- you’ll be surprised how much you use. Carry an ice-scraper.

Battery -- The only accurate way to detect a weak battery is with professional equipment. But do-it-yourselfers can do routine maintenance. Scrape away corrosion from posts and cable connections; clean all surfaces; re-tighten all connections. If battery caps are removable, check fluid level monthly.

A word of caution: Be sure to avoid contact with corrosive deposits and battery acid. Wear eye protection and rubber gloves. Note too that removal of cables can cause damage or loss of data/codes on some newer vehicles so refer to your manual for instructions.

Lights -- Inspect all lights and bulbs; replace burned out bulbs; periodically clean road grime from all lenses with a moistened cloth or towel. To prevent scratching, never use a dry rag.

Exhaust system -- Your vehicle should be placed on a lift and the exhaust system examined for leaks. The trunk and floorboards should be inspected for small holes. Exhaust fumes can be deadly.

Tires -- Worn tires will be of little use in winter weather. Examine tires for remaining tread life, uneven wearing, and cupping; check the sidewalls for cuts and nicks. Check tire pressure once a month. Let the tires “cool down” before checking the pressure. Rotate as recommended. Don’t forget your spare, and be sure the jack is in good condition.

Emergencies -- Carry gloves, boots, blankets, flares, a small shovel, sand or kitty litter, tire chains, a flashlight, and a cell phone. Put a few “high-energy” snacks in your glove box.

The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) was founded in 1972 as a nonprofit, independent organization dedicated to improving the quality of automotive service and repair through the voluntary testing and certification of automotive professionals. ASE-certified technicians wear blue and white ASE shoulder insignia and carry credentials listing their exact area(s) of certification, while their employers often display the blue and white ASE sign. They can be found at all types of repair facilities from dealerships to independent garages and franchises.

Silver Still Shines As Top Car Color

Mon, 05 Mar 2007, 20:30

(NAPSI)-Motorists have no need to brush up on their color choices. For the sixth year in a row, silver shone at the top of the list of colors chosen by buyers of new cars and light trucks sold in North America. The 2005 DuPont Automotive Color Popularity Report cited the continued, but waning, lead of silver in the 53rd compilation of consumer color preferences.

Silver Still At The Top Of The Charts

Though more dominant in years past, silver accounted for 18 percent of all car and light truck sales in North America, 25 percent of sales in South America, 29 percent of all sales in Europe, and a whopping 30 percent of all sales in Asia.

"The mind thinks of silver as a precious metal, such as gold, but more attainable," said award-winning color expert Leatrice Eiseman. "Silver glistens, glimmers and sparkles. There's just something about the appeal of opulence."

Several Colors Strengthen; Gray Makes Substantive Gains

While silver still leads the color pack, the advantage over other hues has faded in favor of chromatic shades such as blue, red and light-metallic brown, as well as medium-dark gray. All of this is combining to put silver's lead under pressure from several colors, all mere percentage points behind the leader.

"Gray is branching out of its silver base," said Karen Surcina, color marketing and technology manager for DuPont Automotive Systems.

Black, now often seen with metallic effects, such as flakes or chips of mica or aluminum, also strengthened as the second-most popular color in Europe and remained among the top three in South America and Asia.

Manufacturers Occasionally Get It Right

Some manufacturers, such as Porsche, have hit the color-palette jackpot on certain models. The limited-edition Porsche Cayenne S Titanium comes in silver, red, black and blue-four of the top six colors listed by DuPont.

"Being a limited edition, the Porsche Cayenne S Titanium comes only in a few colors," said David Pryor, Manager, Market Research and Product Planning. "That is for two major reasons-one, the car is a stylistic statement and two, we keep the selections to a desirable minimum because we can only produce a small number of Titaniums."

The Porsche Cayenne S Titanium, like most limited-edition Porsches, promises to be a sought-after collectable, regardless of color choice.

Color Is Critical Part Of Purchase Decision

The auto market is further pushing the envelope in color, recognizing that as many as 40 percent of consumers are likely to switch brands if they can't get the color they want.

How to Get Your Car Problems Sorted if You Know Nothing About Cars

A lot of people have a hard time getting mechanics to take them seriously when reporting car problems. Does your mechanic seem to talk over you, or try to convince you that you're imagining problems? Here's how to cut to the chase when your knowledge of cars is just about zilch.

Steps

  1. Before you go in, call about the problem so that you can find out what kind of questions they're likely to ask or what information they'll need from you when you take your car in for its service.
  2. Ask the service manager when is the best time to bring your car in so that you can have an unhurried chat about your vehicle.
  3. Go over the problems with him and give him a written report of the problems.
  4. If he doesn't know what you are talking about, have him drive it around the block so that he can acknowledge and understand your concerns. Make notes on your list in his technical-speak to make sure you're both on the same page.
  5. Leave the list with him.
  6. When you pick up your car, drive it around the block to check that all the problems have been solved and bring it back straight away if any of the problems persist.
  7. If your car is new and you have persistent problems that the service dealer cannot fix, call up the factory and arrange for their service department to look at it.

Tips

  • Agree on costs before you give the go ahead on any work.
  • Expect to pay some diagnostics charges before you can get a good quote for the necessary repairs.
  • Ask to have your quote separated into necessary, immediate repairs and other maintenance recommended. Maintenance is important, but you want to separate fixing the current problem from preventing future problems.
  • Ask about the warranty on the repair BEFORE the repair is performed.
  • Do get a second opinion, or at least call a second shop to check the prices you are being quoted at the first shop.
  • When getting a second opinion, going to a local College, University, or Technical school, may be your best bet. Since they are using your car for training, they will rarely try to "upsell" you into things you don't need.
  • Going to the local College, University, or Technical school, although cheap because you don't have to pay labor, may take longer than you would like to wait. (They also rarely do regular maintenance work, to not steal away your business from local auto-shops).
  • If you can, get someone who knows cars to come with you to the shop. The service advisor or mechanic will likely appreciate the help when you are explaining your problem(s) and when they are explaining the repairs back to you.
  • If a mechanic sees that you don't know what you're talking about (or assumes it because you're a woman), they might try to rip you off at an disreputable garage.
  • If your service advisor or mechanic cannot explain the repairs in a way you can understand, leave, and go to someone else. For the service advisor, this is the most important part of their job!
  • Many car owners feel like the statement "we were unable to duplicate your concern" means the same thing as "we think you are crazy" or "we would rather be doing nothing than work on your car." This is simply not the case with a quality repair facility. Repair facilities rely on finding your problem in order to make a living. Sometimes, "we were unable to duplicate your concern" means they spent some time trying to get it to do as you described and were unable to do so.

Warnings

  • Do not take your frustrations out on the service manager. They did not build or break your car. They are trying to help you get your car fixed!
  • Hopping from car dealer to car dealer hoping to find a miracle "cure" can be counter productive, sometimes it's better to stick with a team who knows your car's history. If you have had your car to more than one mechanic, be sure to provide as much history as possible to your current mechanic, including copies of your previous work orders if possible.
  • Remember that the mechanic who quotes you the cheapest price for a particular repair may not be the best. There can be huge differences in the quality of parts being used and in the warranty provisions for the repair.

How to Check out a Used Car Before Buying It

if you are thinking about purchasing a used car, you know how confusing it can be. There are so many things to consider that it can be a daunting experience. This is even truer if you are considering buying a car for the first time. There are many things to look for when purchasing a used car but one important factor is to give the car a physical check before making your final decision. Here, then, are a few general pointers on how to physically check out a used car before you buy it.

Steps

  1. Make sure that the car is on level ground before checking it out. This is to ensure that you will be able to clearly check the tires and to see if there is anything sagging on the car.
  2. Carefully check the paint job of the car, taking note of any rust spots, dents or scratches. Look at the sides of the car from end-on for waviness; that indicates paint work. Run your finger along the edges of the joints between panels; roughness indicates residue left from masking tape.
  3. Check the trunk of the car to make sure it is still in good condition. It should not show any sign of rust, or water entry due to cracks or holes. Wear inside of the trunk indicates usage of the car.
  4. Check under the hood of the car for any indication of dents, damage or rust. These can all be signs that the car was either poorly or damage. Each fender, just inside where the hood joins should have the decal with the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) of the car; if one is missing, that fender was replaced.
  5. The hoses and belts should not have cracks, the radiator hoses should not be soft.
  6. Go inside the car and check the seats and upholstery of the car for any tears, rips, stains, or other type of damage.
  7. Check to make sure the air-conditioning of the car is working well by turning it on to see that it works. If air conditioning is a must buy a car with R134 coolant. Most cars fitted with R134 are 1993 or newer and have a sticker on the AC Condenser.
  8. Check the odometer of the car for the mileage. This is important because the mileage indicates the car’s age. On the average, a normal driver will drive between 10,000 to 15,000 miles a year; however, this depends on many factors. Remember, cars age by time and mileage. Buying a 10 year old car with very low miles is not necessarily a good thing.
  9. Test drive the car before making any final decisions. This is perhaps one of the best ways to know the condition of the car. Hence, a buyer should make all effort to do a test drive first before coming to any decisions.
  10. Check out the car's service history which should give you some information regarding the performances, repairs, and problems of the car. Ideally, the current owner would have kept a record of the times when the car needed servicing and should be willing to show you this information. There are instances where used cars are sold because of past accidents or negative experiences.
  11. Be sure to check the brakes of the car by pressing down hard enough on the brakes to decelerate rapidly, but not enough to slide. Try this going around 30 mph in an area without traffic. You should not feel any vibration from the brake pedal, or hear any squealing or strange noises. Brakes that pulsate indicate the need for having the rotors resurfaced or replaced and new pads installed. It should not swerve; this can be caused by a bad brake caliper or worn steering components.
  12. Inspect the engine for any sort of leaks, or corrosion. On the engine block, look for any dark brown oil stains, this will indicate that there is a leak in a gasket, and could possibly lead to an expensive repair in the future. Check the brake fluid, and reservoir to make sure its is not leaking. The belts should look new (i.e. not have cracks or signs of drying). Old belts can snap, and if you do not know how to replace them, it will cost between $100-500 depending on which belt goes bad.
  13. Remove the oil filler cap. A foam residue on the inside indicates a leaking head gasket. Forget that car. Look at the condition of the coolant in the overflow jar; filthy brown coolant means it's never been flushed and often means a leaky head gasket.
  14. Pull the transmission dipstick; the fluid should be pink or red. An old car may be dark but it should not look or smell burnt. It should also be full (check with the engine running).
  15. The timing belt is the most important belt in the engine, and is also the most costly to replace. If the car is equipped with a steel timing chain, you don't have to worry about this. Normal lifespan of a timing belt is from 60-100+ thousand miles; this depends on the manufacturer.
  16. The tires should be worn evenly and they should match. Look at the surface of the tire for feathering (bad alignment). Bad alignment can be caused by worn steering/suspension components, the pothole down the street or frame damage.
  17. Never buy a frame damaged car. Check the saddle (connects the front fenders and holds the top of the radiator). It should no be welded on either side, it should be bolted in. Inspect the bolt heads at the top of the fenders inside the hood; scratch marks indicates that the fenders have been replaced or realigned (after a crash). Look for welds inside the door jambs.
  18. If you are able, try to get under the car when it is safely raised and inspect the exhaust system or any under-body rust. This is also the time to inspect for frame or unibody damage.
  19. It is definitely worth the money to go to a mechanic and have them inspect it. This will cost some money, but its better to pay 50-75 bucks to get a car inspected and find out its not worth the investment, than to spend $10,000 on a car and find out within a few months, you are going to have to spend more money on repairs for it.
  20. Do not pay sticker price. A used car is a negotiable item. Do not feel the need to pay the price they are asking. The dealer bought this car at a low price, and is turning around and selling it for much more than they purchased it with the notion that they might have to lower that sticker price. Depending on the quality of the vehicle, feel free to offer a price. Be sure that it is a reasonable offer. If the dealer is asking $15,000, do not offer $10,000. It is merely an insult by doing this. If the car is over $10,000, try to negotiate at least $1500 off of the car. You can pre-qualify yourself at your bank or at a Credit Union. That will determine what you can spend for a car. Try to buy a car that is less than they tell you. Most people try to buy more car than they can really afford. Remember, no matter how good that car is today, it is going to require maintenance in the future. Use parts of the car that are unflattering to your advantage. If a car is not the color you are looking for, tell the dealer "I really like the car, but I don't like that it is green, that is the only thing holding me back from buying it" The dealer will see that you want it, and find some way to get you into that car.

Tips

  • Vehicle History Reports are inexpensive and can contain very valuable information. Don't read too deep! The important things are: Accidents and Odometer Discrepancies. If you are looking at a car from a dealer have them provide you with a vehicle history report (Carfax). Make sure they give you the last page off the printer.
  • Buying a car from your choice service center is the best way to ensure long term satisfaction. If buying from a dealer with no service center have the car checked out by your mechanic!
  • Certified Cars cost a little more have some assurances and usually a warranty.
  • Compare the condition of the car's interior to the readout on the odometer. A car that ostensibly has 15,000 miles on it will probably not have a driver's seat that looks like it's been savagely beaten - repeatedly - with a meat tenderizer. An overly worn passenger compartment coupled with low mileage can be an indication of odometer fraud.
  • Beware of UFOs...Unidentified Funky Odors. It can be very difficult and expensive to get a strange smell out of a used car.
  • Use an online service like Edmunds.com to help value the car. Use Consumer Reports Buying Guide to check out the general reputation of the car. Don't pay thousands more for a great reputation. A Camry is a great car but it's still just a machine. A Buick Lesabre is a very good car and can be had for thousands less. In an older car, condition is much more important than the nameplate.

Warnings

  • If after doing this preliminary checkup of the car you think you would like to proceed further with the purchase of the car, seek out the professional opinion of a qualified mechanic. This is a good idea if this the first time you are buying a car or if you have little or no experience with cars. The current owner of the car should have no objections to you having the car checked out further by a mechanic; if the owner does have some objections to this, it could be because there may be something to hide, and in which case you will want to look elsewhere for your purchase.
  • If you live somewhere (such as the state of California) that requires a smog or emissions test on most vehicles, be sure to get the car tested before you purchase it. Repairs to the emission control system can be very expensive and any car that fails inspection will usually need to be fixed before it can be registered. Also, cars with serious wear to internal engine components such as piston rings or valve seats may not pass an emissions test; a smog check can be a good way to make sure that a car is both running properly now and does not have major mechanical defects that will cause you trouble down the road. This test can easily be combined with a vehicle inspection by a qualified mechanic. For places where a smog check is not needed, be sure that a mechanic checks the engine's compression which will also help indicate whether there are internal engine wear problems (this is a particular concern for vehicles with more than 50,000 miles).

Toyota Carollas top Japanese car sales

By Makiko Kitamura and Kae Inoue Bloomberg News
Published: July 5, 2007

TOKYO: Toyota Motor's Corolla model topped Japanese vehicle sales rankings during the first half of the year, after the company revamped the model in October for the first time in six years.

Sales of the Corolla rose 9.4 percent to 77,326 units in the six-month period that ended June 30, compared to a year earlier, the Japan Automobile Dealers Association said Thursday in a release. Toyota also took second place with the Vitz compact car. Honda Motor's Fit compact was the third best-selling model.

Compact cars, with engines of 1 to 1.5 liters, make up the second-largest car segment in Japan behind minicars. The category commanded a 28.9 percent market share, or about 1.56 million vehicles, in 2006, and will grow to 29.4 percent this year, according to Hirofumi Yokoi, an analyst at CSM Worldwide.

"The segment will grow the fastest this year, driven by the top-selling three models, particularly the new Corolla," Yokoi said. CSM forecasts the minicar category will drop from a 37.3 percent share in 2006 to 36.4 percent this year.

In June, the Corolla topped the sales ranking for a ninth straight month, followed by Toyota's Vitz and Honda's Fit.

Toyota, which sells 4 out of every 10 vehicles in Japan, claimed 4 of the top 10 slots in sales rankings last month. Honda, Japan's second-biggest automaker, had two of those slots, including the Stream minivan. Nissan Motor, Japan's third-largest automaker, had three, including the fourth-ranked Serena minivan and eighth-ranked Tiida compact car.

Japan's vehicle sales, excluding minicars, fell for a 24th straight month in June by 11.2 percent to 291,640 units. Sales in the first half of the year fell to their lowest since 1975 to 1.8 million. The Tokyo-based dealers group excludes minicars and imports from its rankings.

Including minicars, Suzuki Motor's Wagon R kept the top slot for a fifth straight month, with sales of 19,786 in June. Second place went to Daihatsu Motor's Move, followed by Daihatsu's Mira.

Minicars, powered by engines no larger than 0.66 liters, accounted for 6 of the 10 best-selling models in June.

Mazda Motor, which is one-third owned by Ford Motor, introduced a redesigned Demio compact car in Japan to attract buyers, as the domestic auto market shrank.

The automaker plans to sell 130,000 Demios globally this year, excluding China, the company said Thursday. In Japan, the company expects to sell 5,000 Demios a month.

The Hiroshima-based Mazda expects the revamped Demio, its best-selling model at home, to help combat a projected decline in first-half earnings. Compact cars have increased their share of Japan's overall vehicle market, which is getting smaller as Japan's population declines and as a lack of new models have discouraged consumers from buying cars.

"Demand for compact cars will continue to be relatively strong even though the whole market is contracting," said Yasuhiro Matsumoto, a senior analyst at Shinsei Securities in Tokyo. "The Demio will give strong support to Mazda's profit this year."

The vehicle, equipped with 1.3- or 1.5-liter engines, went on sale Thursday. The model is priced between ¥1.13 million, or $9,200, and ¥1.58 million.

Mazda aims to increase sales in Japan by 0.5 percent to 262,000 vehicles in the 12 months ending March 2008.

The Demio, redesigned for the first time since August 2002, is sold as the Mazda2 outside Japan. It competes with Toyota Motor's Vitz and Passo, Honda Motor's Fit and Nissan Motor's March. The Vitz, with a 1-, 1.3- or 1.5-liter engine, is sold for between ¥1.05 million and ¥1.62 million, while Nissan's March, with a 1.2- or 1.5-liter engine, costs between ¥1.1 million and ¥1.46 million.

Honda plans to release a redesigned Fit later this year.

Compact cars make up about a third of Japan's passenger vehicle market, compared with 13 percent in 1996.

Mazda said in April that net income may total ¥85 billion this business year, compared with ¥73.7 billion the previous year.

Sales will gain 2.2 percent to ¥3.32 trillion and operating profit will rise 0.9 percent to ¥160 billion, the company said.

Aero TT dethrones Veyron

Words - Gautam Sharma
American carmaker lays claim to building the fastest production car in the world

It's all but official: the Bugatti Veyron is no longer the fastest production car in the world, as US-based Shelby Supercars (SSC) has just snared the record with its Ultimate Aero Twin Turbo.

According to a press release issued by the ultra-niche carmaker, it now holds the title of the "World's Fastest Production Car" after its Aero TT scorched to an average top speed of 411.70km/h.

This figure eclipses the 407km/h v-max unofficially recorded by the mega-expensive Veyron, and it also easily tops the 390.13km/h top whack with which the Swedish-built Koenigsegg CCR is officially credited.
Powered by a thumping 6.2-litre twin-turbo V8, the Aero TT punches out 870kW and 1483Nm, and its manufacturer was confident of cracking the record despite missing out earlier in the year (more here).

In order to ensure it gained the maximum public exposure from the exercise, SSC set out to validate its top speed claim in accordance with the strict guidelines set by Guinness World Records.

Among other requirements, in order to meet Guinness' approval, a vehicle testing for the top speed record must race down the course, turn around, and make a second pass in the opposite direction within one hour.

The vehicle's 'top speed' is calculated by averaging the top speeds of each pass in order to negate any favourable road or weather conditions.

Rather than using a high-speed bowl or the Bonneville Salt Flats for its record attempt, the company chose a temporarily closed two-lane stretch of public highway in Washington State (in northwestern USA) as the venue.

Results followed immediately as the Ultimate Aero posted a top speed of 413.83km/h on its first pass and 409.71km/h on its return pass to set the new top speed record at a staggering 411.76km/h.

The data, collected by Dewetron's GPS tracking system, and other checks will be verified by Guinness before the Ultimate Aero is officially crowned the "World's Fastest Production Car".

What's the secret to its success? Brute force, really, as the 1247kg Aero TT has a power-to-weight ratio of 708kW per tonne. This reportedly enables it to rocket from 0-60mph (0-96km/h) in just 2.78 seconds and spit out the quarter-mile in a fraction under 10 seconds.

Improving your car’s performance

Improving your car’s performance: what are the options?

Tweaking your car’s performance is no easy task.

With the thousands of options available, it’s very easy to be overwhelmed with the possibilities. Honda for example: manufacturers state that there are more Honda performance parts and after-market auto parts available than there are cars in an entire state.

Now, how do you know where to start?

A good place to start is to group what are the changes you can do to your car. Performance parts can be grouped according to the parts in which you want to change: these can be the Brakes, Engine, Suspensions, and Transmission.

Brakes

A car’s brake system has a lot to do to your car’s overall performance. It’s because the measure of a car’s performance isn’t just about speed; performance is about controlling speed to your benefit. A good braking system is measured by the brake’s ability to respond quickly to generate friction to the rotors, the brake pads’ operating temperature range, and their ability to resist fade. The brake pads’ ability to generate friction on the rotors enables you to slow the vehicle quickly. Wide operating temperature range is important so that your brakes are still effective when cold and still able to resist fade when it’s hot. The ability to resist fade is important, since when brakes fades, brakes lose their ability to slow the vehicle effectively. Choosing brakes with higher values on these attributes will help you gain performance.

Engine

Now let us get into the core of the car, the engine. There are several things you can do with your engines to increase your car’s performance. You can change the exhaust system to something bigger to allow the exhaust to exit easily out of the cylinders. Headers, mufflers and pipes are some of the parts of your exhaust system which you can change to increase your performance. Ignition is also one think which you can change to boost your car’s performance. You can install a system that improves spark timing to get more out of the compressed air and fuel in the cylinders. Installing cold air intakes also increases the engines performance since cooler air is denser therefore increasing the amount of oxygen available for combustion. Radiators also contribute to engine performance; they help maintain normal engine operating conditions in order to prevent the engine from overheating and stalling down.

Suspension

A car’s suspension is responsible for increasing the handling ability of a car, making it easier to drive, turn corners and reduce body rolls during cornering. Better suspensions also give you a quieter and smoother ride enhancing fuel efficiency. Better suspensions also give you better ride even on uneven road. Better suspension also gives you better control over you vehicle.

Transmission

A car’s transmission is responsible for managing the speed by which your car runs. Depending on the demands or the situation, you either need to go faster or move slower. Having the car able to quickly respond once you change gears improves your driving experience giving you a better ride boosting your performance. Therefore it is important that you change your transmission system to something that quickly responds whenever you change gears. You can also modify the gear ratios of your car to suit your needs, there are modification kits available that can put your gears into overdrive which increases your engine’s output speed.

Overall, tweaking your car for maximum performance is not an easy task, but, once you figure out

Kids in Cars: Surviving the Road Trip

"When are we going to reach?" is a common refrain of the little ones whenever you are on a drive to take them to a picnic. To keep your little one from asking such questions it is better to have enough games and activities to keep them occupied.

Riding in cars often causes individuals of all ages to become queasy or sick. Motion sickness can ruin any road trip and make a ride of any length miserable. If you or your child experiences motion sickness while riding in a car, contact a physician. He or she will be able to prescribe medication to aid you with this problem. Also, over the counter medication like Dramamine is excellent for preventing motion sickness. Consider packing snacks that will aid with queasy stomachs.

Finding kid friendly food on the road is often difficult. Instead of stopping for greasy, unhealthy fast food or sugary snacks, pack your own food. Do not provide snacks or foods that will make your children hyper. Consider packing natural, healthy items like trail mix, granola bars, or fruit. Also, do not pack foods that are difficult to eat or need preparation before consuming. If you include foods that require extra items, like silverware to eat, then be sure to include these items in your bag. Do not forget to include plenty of napkins.

In case your health permits you to read while riding, you can declare a story time, for which the kids are going to love you. Carry along books that happen to be the absolute favorites of your kid. Apart from the educational books you can also include a book or two on the destination you are going to be visiting, setting the tone of excitement right in the ride itself.

If you cannot ride in the car and read a book, consider taking a book on tape or CD. You will find a wide variety of audio books read by favorite authors or actors. This will also put an end to any arguments regarding differing musical tastes.

For especially long car rides, purchase a small toy or game for your child. Give this item to your child during the trip. Include things like traveling puzzles, activity or coloring books, or small toys your child can easily play with while in the car. Items like paper dolls, matchbox cars, or small action figures are great for traveling in cars. Avoid bringing large toys or toys with many parts on road trips.

With the prices of the DVD players and TV's touching a rock bottom, you can contemplate buying these as it would cost you less than a hundred dollars to buy them. If you think that you cannot afford it right now, you can scout for borrowing a model from any of your friends, neighbor or family. However be careful to ask everyone for their favorites including the kids. With everyone having their share of favorites this reduces the scope of a fight or an argument at a later stage.

The key to riding in cars with children is to keep them entertained. Many individuals grew up playing fun road trip games like license plate bing-o that never go out of style. Regardless if you are in the car for one mile or one thousand miles, turn a road trip into a fun experience for the entire family.

Buying Your First Car

Author: Ecommerce

Congratulations and welcome to the freedom and independence a car can bring to your life! This is a very exciting time for many first-time car buyers, but it also can be a daunting learning experience for those who don’t take the time to research what they are buying.

Take some time to make sure your first purchase is your most successful.

Purchasing a New Car?

When it comes to purchasing a new car, it is important to be aware of different options and possible problems. As a “new car” is generally expensive, take the time to look over the following checklist when purchasing the automobile:

  • Decide which car you are in love with! Factor in comfort, handling, colour, and how the vehicle parks
  • Browse the Internet to compare prices
  • Set realistic budget goals – Don’t try to make your budget fit your car! Don’t forget about the cost of gas and insurance
  • What will be your method of payment? Full payment, financing, bank loan etc.
  • Pick one car and go back to various car dealerships to compare prices
  • Test drive (approximately 10-15 minutes) all cars you are considering buying
  • Grab a piece of paper and write the “pros” and “cons” of each car you drove
  • When you arrive at the dealership – remember not to act to impulsively! Be ready to work with the car dealership to make sure you get the best price possible!

Purchasing a Used Car?

Don’t want to break the bank but still need a way to get around town? A used vehicle can be a successful purchase as long as you take the time to research and prepare for the unexpected. In addition to the list above, a used car buyer should also consider:

  • Set your viewing time during the day when the light is good. If it is dull out you may not be able to see the car’s faults.
  • Review all documents very carefully. This includes the log book (V5), Mot certificate, and any paperwork for repairs. If you are not confident to review these documents yourself, ask a knowledgeable acquaintance or car repairer.
  • Request an independent inspection – these are usually available through your motoring organization.
  • an HPI check which will ensure that this vehicle has not been stolen, written off, or cloned.

Worried that you won’t be able to do it alone? Even if you are not a car-genius, you can still evaluate your potential vehicle with confidence.

  1. Look for Rust. Check in the hard-to-see places such as under the car and on the brake lines. Although rust is a common car problem it can cause weakened metal – press on the rusted area firmly or tap it with a blunt object to ensure that the metal is still strong.
  2. Check the Engine. Start the engine and listen to it run. It is a bad sign if blue smoke comes from the exhaust, the oil light stays on for a long time, the engine revs itself, or if the exhaust misfires.
  3. Look the car over. Check the odometer not only for the mileage, but to ensure that the numbers are in line and haven’t been tampered with. Ensure that there are not any weld marks in the car to signal a car that has been joined together from several parts.
  4. Take a test drive. During your drive try the car on a hill, make a few quick stops, and see how it handles on a curvy road. Drive it in the conditions that it may experience in the future with you to ensure that the car won’t breakdown.

Remember – if you still have doubts or concerns at this stage it is better to walk away from the vehicle and look for something else.

History of Cars

Author: Anil

The automobile as we know it was not invented in a single day by a single inventor. The history of the automobile reflects an evolution that took place worldwide.

A world without cars, although unimaginable today, was but a wink back in the evolution of times. When we say history of automobiles, what comes to your mind – a steam engine? But does that explain the much asked question who was really the first in car history. This involves exploring the lives of many famous automotive makers in detail, the origins of the name automobile, the patent disputes, and more. The automobile as we know it was not invented in a single day by a single inventor. The history of the automobile reflects an evolution that took place worldwide.

Starting with the first theoretical plans for a motor vehicle that had been drawn up by both Leonardo da Vinci and Isaac Newton.

The very first self-propelled car was built in 1769, when Nicolas Cugnot, a French military engineer designed a steam powered road-vehicle.

The vehicle was built at the Paris Arsenal, and was used by the French Army to move cannons. It had three wheels with the engine in the front along with the boiler. While Cugnot's 'car' was capable of attaining speeds of upto 6 kms/hour, it was far too heavy and slow to be of practical use. The vehicle had to stop every ten to fifteen minutes to build up steam power. The steam engine and boiler were separate from the rest of the vehicle and placed in the front. The following year (1770), Cugnot built a steam-powered tricycle that carried four passengers.

Steam engines powered cars by burning fuel that heated water in a boiler, creating steam that expanded and pushed pistons that turned the crankshaft, which then turned the wheels. During the early history of self-propelled vehicles - both road and railroad vehicles were being developed with steam engines. Steam engines added so much weight to a vehicle that they proved a poor design for road vehicles; however, steam engines were very successfully used in locomotives. Historians, who accept that early steam-powered road vehicles were automobiles, feel that Nicolas Cugnot was the inventor of the first automobile.

After Cugnot Several Other Inventors Designed Steam-Powered Road Vehicles.Cugnot’s vehicle was improved by Frenchman, Onesiphore Pecqueur, who also invented the first differential gear. In 1789, the first U.S. patent for a steam-powered land vehicle was granted to Oliver Evans.

The first successful internal combustion engine was a two-stroke gas driven engine patented by Jean Joseph Etienne Lenoir of Belgium in 1860. In 1862 he built an experimental vehicle driven by his gas-engine, which managed to achieve a speed of 3 kms/hour. By 1865 around 500 of these engines were in use in Paris alone.

The first practical "four-stroke" engine was patented by the Otto and Langen Company of Deutz, Germany.

Otto started a workshop in Deutz near Cologne, supported by Langen in 1863. He had a model engine built and improved upon the gas engine, making it a practical power source. The four-stroke Otto Engine was invented in 1876, and a large number of engines were produced under the patent of Otto and Langen.

Saving Money

How to Save Real Money When Bargaining With a Private Seller for a Used Car

By: B. Hokin

There are a few ways to honestly and ethically get the car of your dreams for a reasonable price. Follow these tips and hints and you may be surprised how much the seller will discount the advertised price.

Ready to Start? Let's go.

  1. Do this before you even see the car.

When you see the car on the Internet or in the newspaper or the magazine and you are interested in checking it out more closely, do these things first:

    a) Check out the price of this car against others of similar specifications.
    b) Have your finances worked out in advance. Set your spending limit and stick to it. Offering cash is usually a better option than saying you will need to organize finance.
    c) Contact the seller and ask the following questions:

    - Is the car still for sale?
    - How many kilometers or miles has it done?
    - How long have you owned the car for?
    - What color is it?
    - What is the overall condition of the car?
    - How negotiable is the price?

If you're satisfied with the answers to these questions ask if you can see the car at a mutually convenient time.
  2. Do these things once you see the car.

    a) Check it out closely in all areas and test whether the answers you were given over the phone were correct.
    b) See if there are things that need to be done to get the car to your standard and mentally work out their costs. For example, does the car need new tires, does it need a new windscreen?
    c) Go for a test drive. Not with the stereo going all the time though, so you can hear the car's noises.
    d) Work out, silently, what you think you are prepared to pay as a maximum for this car. Make sure it is equal to, or less than your set limit.
  3. Remember these things once you have decided that you will purchase the car, if the price is right.

    a) This is not the only car in the world for you. There are others. Maybe, they will be even better.
    b) Don't be in a rush to conclude the deal. Take your time.
    c) Don't be swayed by seller saying "I have another buying waiting".
  4. Do these things when negotiating.

    a) Say "I'd like to make an offer".
    b) Tell the seller the costs of the items you think will need fixing once you purchase the car.
    c) Make your offer taking b) into account and leaving room to move upwards on your price to the maximum you set.

For example, say your maximum spend is $10,000, the car is advertised for $12,000 but you have found $2,000 of work to be done to bring it up to your standard. Make an offer for $8,000 ($10,000-$2,000). The seller may respond by saying that $10,000 is his minimum. After taking a suitable amount of time to consider this response, you can say "I'll go half way, is $9,000 OK? If the seller agrees, then you have purchased the car for $3,000 less than advertised. However, your $9,000 price plus your $2,000 of expenses is $11,000, $1,000 over your limit. No worries, just delay some of the work until you can afford it. The seller feels a bit of pain, you feel a bit of pain and you both are reasonably satisfied with the deal.

These are just some general tips and hints from my experiences in buying and selling cars over a long period of time. I am passing them on to you to help you with your personal finances. You need to be able to save money wherever you can.

For details on what to look for when buying a used car from a private seller see my other article titled "How to Save Real Money When Purchasing a Used Car from a Private Seller".

Tips for buying car

Always remember that tow people can go to the same car dealership and buy the same care, but the one unprepared and my pay thousands of dollars more than the other. This is a fact-of-life in the car business.
So to be informed and well prepared before buying a new care make sure to check the below list of tips:
1. Get new car prices quotes first and before you make a car deal.
2. Be sure you know what you want to buy.
3. Be sure you know how much you are willing to pay.
4. Be aware of the financial cost of the car.
5. Keep the negotiation with the salesman based on the selling car price, and not in trade or monthly payments prices.

Negotiating the car deal!

Now, here is all you have to do:
Once you have all your figures and you know what the dealer cost is, simply sit down with the salesperson at the dealership you want to buy a new car from and say the following:

"I am here to buy a new car TODAY! I will give you $xxx Amount (you fill in the amount) over invoice and that's it! I can buy it over the Internet for $xxx Amount, but I'd rather buy a new car from you! I know what your cost is on the vehicle, so let's keep this simple!"

****Sidenote****

You can offer them anywhere from $100 to $500 over invoice and feel assured that you are getting a fair price!
$100 on lower priced vehicles on up to $500 on the more expensive ones. $300 is fair for both parties on average.
Believe me, if the car dealer you are trying to buy a new car from won't go along with you, then there are plenty of other car dealers out there who will jump at the deal!

****Sidenote****

Now to continue our dialogue...tell the sales person the following:

"Tell your manager this is what I'm willing to pay to buy a new car and no more! And I keep the Rebate aside from this price I'm offering!

"Now this is a take it or leave it deal! Don't come back and try to bump me! If your manager won't agree to my deal I'll take my business elsewhere!

"If you work with me on this I will do all I can to send people I know to buy from you, and I will come back to see you the next time I'm in the market to buy a new car."

OK! Now you have them right where you want them!

By the way, be polite and friendly to the sales person, because he or she is under more pressure than anybody! In most cases the sales person will appreciate this approach! It makes his or her job a lot easier, and makes for a quick deal for both of you! Plus, by saying that you will send other people to this sales person it puts him or her on your side!
If the sales person comes back from the manager with anything other than an "OK" get up and start to leave! If the sales person tries to get you to stay (and He will!), give him or her one more chance!

Don't let the car dealer convince you that there are any add-ons such as "dealer prep," rustproofing, paint sealant or fabric protector, and therefore you'll HAVE to pay extra for this stuff! It's all bull, so don't fall for it!

Just stick to your guns and you will get a great deal!

Now be careful here because, it can get a little sticky if you have a trade! First of all, you do not want to tell the dealer you are trading until AFTER you have negotiated your best new car price!

This is very important!

An astute car sales person will ask you early on in the process if you are trading. I don't want to tell you to lie, but it's very important that the sales person understands that you are not trading...at least at that particular moment! However, there's no law against changing your mind later on!

Simply tell them that you want to keep the trade out of the picture! Period!
Also, do not negotiate a car deal based on monthly payment either. Get the price set first then talk payment, but you will be much better off arranging your own financing.

Then all you have to decide is how much you are willing to let your trade go for. The dealer will never give you more than wholesale value for your trade! Never!
They can make it look like they are giving you more then they really are if you allow them to quote a trade value off of the sticker price of the new car you're buying. This is why it is so important to negotiate your best price first. Then bring the trade into the picture after you have a firm selling price negotiated!

This will give you a "ballpark" of what you can expect for your vehicle. Just remember, that used car prices are very subjective, so the "book value" may not reflect the car's actual worth!
Remember, the car dealer will only give you wholesale value for your vehicle.

Getting back to our new car deal....Now you have the dealer cornered again, and they have no choice but to quote a trade-in allowance that is subtracted from the negotiated selling price! This way they can't artificially inflate the trade-in allowance, and you will know exactly what they are really giving you!

And also remember this....there are many factors that influence trade-in value. Things like mileage, overall condition of interior and exterior, tires, exhaust system, brakes, engine, transmission and so forth. So keep in mind that trade-in values are very subjective!
And don't let them lump the rebate, if any, in with the trade allowance! If you do you lose!

Believe me, car dealers hate doing a deal in this manner! It gives them no room for anything, which is exactly where you want them!
Simply put, if you don't corner them they will certainly try to corner you! So don't be shy! It's your money!

The only other area where you have to be careful is in financing. The dealer can make a ton of money off of you in the finance office if you're not careful!

Automotive History Eras

First let’s take a quick look about the history of cars.

Vehicles that can be considered automobiles were demonstrated as early as 1769, and 1885 marked the introduction of gasoline powered internal combustion engines. Automotive history is generally divided into a number of eras based on the major design and technology shifts. Although the exact boundaries of each era can be hazy, scholarship has defined them as follows:
  1. 7 Modern era (25 years preceding the current year)
  2. Future direction …
